One World government. Why is that a bad idea? What could be wrong with striving for oneness and unity, tolerance, financial security, one-world political leadership and security - open borders between nations - and oh yes … did I mention world peace? Historical and biblical precedents indicate these utopian ideas are not new. Concepts of the one-world government system have been coveted by the wealthy and enlightened, but have all met with the same fate - abject failure. Could it be different this time? Does the Bible address this?
One of the earliest recorded attempts at world conquest was probably by the powerful armies of the Assyrians about 25 BC-605 BC. Their thirst for world domination led to their ultimate demise as perhaps the most powerful nation of its time. One of the more familiar biblical attempts at globalization is The Tower of Babel - billed as man’s attempt to centralize government in one location as recorded in Genesis 11:4. Then the people in their arrogance said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
On the surface, it seemed like a good idea, but here the Bible teaches that man’s ego led him to act independent of God’s will, and in disobedience to God’s design as outlined in Genesis 9:1: “Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.’ ”
Man’s attempts to change his world without including God from a historical perspective ultimately lead to failure. God is the only one through whom we can find lasting peace and security on this earth and beyond. But a discussion about the one world order would not be complete without at least a mention of the link to the End Times that the Bible describes. The Bible speaks prophetically of one who is known as the Antichrist. We are told he will seek to rule the world for a time and will attack the saints (Christians) with limited success. His power will come from Satan himself who will ultimately seek to be worshiped as God.
None have been given the crystal ball with the times and dates of the coming earth-shattering events. One thing we know with some certainty is that this new globalization effort is a precursor to the coming of one who is given the title Antichrist. A series of events like man has never seen (Mark 13:19) - events such as wars and great travails such as The Tribulation period and more will accompany him. All this, including globalization and a one-world government, has been prophesied to take place before the climactic second coming of Christ. The two are inextricably tied together. One cannot take place without the other.
As we conclude this three-part series, a picture is painted of a world ruled by one central government - a world without borders or sovereignty - where personal and religious freedoms are stripped away - where laws are enforced to suppress free speech, and respect for the life of the individual is absent or minimal. Doom and gloom seem to be the order of the day in this scenario. Fortunately, the story doesn’t end there …
The Bible never gives us problems without providing solutions. It is clear that man does not have the answers or ability to overcome his sinful nature, but God has provided a way. It is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). Yes - there is hope beyond the flawed efforts of man - there is hope for tomorrow - and hope for eternity (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) ...
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. 18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
